HMS Belfast served
throughout the Second World
War, playing a leading part
in the destruction of the
battle cruiser Scharnhorst,
and also the Normandy Landings.
In service with the Royal
Navy until 1965, she was saved
for the nation in 1971 as
a unique reminder of Britain's
naval heritage.
Welcome to the web version
of the HMS Belfast Virtual
Tour, which was originally
designed for an information
kiosk. This was installed
on board to enable visitors
with limited mobility to 'virtually
visit' the lower decks. It
also allows all our visitors
to 'see' parts of the ship
which are not available on
the visitors' route, including
hospitality and administration
areas, and spaces accessed
using vertical ladders and
thus unavailable for health
and safety reasons.
The nature of the ship makes
access to some of the areas
below decks impossible for
people with limited mobility.
Some modifications have been
made to provide a short tour
of the ship including the
Quarterdeck, the Boat Deck
and the Walrus Café,
and now, using this virtual
tour, we can offer our visitors
a chance to see what the lower
decks look like. Wheelchair
users can access the ship
is via a gangway with a lift,
and we can provide wheelchairs
on loan for the duration of
your visit.
We are proud of our Virtual
Tour and felt it was worthwhile
to allow even greater numbers
of people to experience HMS
Belfast, and so published
this web version. We hope
you find the tour easy to
use, and interesting too!
On the left you'll find information
about visiting this historic
ship.
